ImageProposed Amendments to Jordanian Company Law No. 22

The Company Law No. 22 for the year 1997 is going to witness some major amendments to its articles.

The objective behind the amendments is to enhance the business climate in Jordan and to facilitate the registration procedures for entrepreneurs.

One of the main expected changes to Law No 22 is to reduce the mandatory limited liability company capital to be approximately 3,000JD (US$4,235) rather than the current capital which is 30,000JD (US$42,349). According to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, this will help to attract more individual initiatives from both the Jordanian and non-Jordanian citizens to build their own business in the Jordanian markets.

American Ambassador David Hale and USAID Mission Director Jay Knott today signed a grant agreement with Jordan’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Suhair Al-Ali under which the U.S. will provide $13,958,261 to help the Government of Jordan foster its political development efforts and improve the judicial sector. The agreement is part of the overall U.S. assistance package to Jordan for fiscal year 2007, which consists of $255,300,000 in economic assistance and $276,800,000 in security–related assistance.

In cooperation with the Judicial Institute of Jordan, USAID has provided 1,700 advanced training opportunities for judges this past year alone. These opportunities reinforce Jordan’s highly-regarded judicial system. A strong and independent judicial sector contributes to economic and political development by underpinning a democratic, market-based society founded on the rule of law.

The United States’ assistance program to Jordan is among the largest U.S. assistance programs in the world. The program highlights the long-standing and ever-growing partnership that links the Jordanian and American people, and the commitment of the American people to support Jordanians as they seek to improve their living conditions and create more economic opportunities. Since 1952, U.S. economic assistance to Jordan has totaled over $5 billion.
